For the record I didn't feel it wise for the chairman of a DIFFERENT con to be perpetuating lies about FC and their practices. I knew better, most people knew better, so it was pointless for him to continue. But at least FC is making good on listening to us =)

Am I the only one who thinks it is rude that the original post was deleted, and all the comments? I wanted to read those, now I can't.

Huh. When I saw this thread an hour ago or so, there was a link to a zip archive of the thread. Wish I'd kept it.

I read the Zip archive of the discussion, and it was not quite complete. There were also some points I wanted to clarify, but that's all over.

I do as well. The least they could have done was asked me to lock all comments. I would have happily obliged.

They said they made it available as a ZIP file on the forums.

Who was talking smack about the FC dealersroom? I haven't heard anything.
thornwolf From: thornwolf Date: April 11th, 2006 07:29 pm (UTC) (Link)
Wow. you showed up late.

No one was "talking smack". I made a post stating that the way the dealers tables are distributed are unfair to "new blood" that may want to get a dealer's table. The same dealers are offered their tables again for the next year before the dealer's room actually closes on the last day, and of course they are going to want to sign up even if theyre not sure theyre going to come the next year, so none of us newer artists have a fighting chance to get in there. No other con does this, and a lot of us feel it's unfair.

Ah, I see. Sorry I'm late - my car had a flat, yeah, that's it. A flat...

I would make it so that those artists wishing to reserve the table for the next year have to pay before much earlier. I noticed many tables with nobody at them this year. If someone doesn't reserve within a month of the end of the con, then they go back in the pool with everybody else. Now, the "no show, others go" bit is troublesome because nobody is going to bring all their stuff if they don't already have a table. But I'd rather give empty tables to someone who is there and ready with stuff to sell. Perhaps those at the head of the list can have their gear shipped to the hotel ahead of time if the odds are good that there will be an opening. Expensive gamble, I agree.

Perhaps those who bring their stuff and don't get a dealers table get first pick of the artist alley, but they have to turn down their tables at the end of the business day and store their stuff in the understanding that there will be NO security in the hallway. This way, the artist can still sell to pay for bringing the gear, the con has full dealers den and there are no additional security issues for the staff.

Hi, wandered over from dustmeat's journal (lazy weekend link clicking ahoy...) and wanted to comment on this:

"No other con does this, and a lot of us feel it's unfair."

Actually, this is untrue. Every professional science fiction/fantasy, anime or comic convention Radio Comix has exhibited at over the past nine years does it precisely in this way. The dealers who are in the dealer's room already at the current convention are given the option to purchase their tables for the next year's con on the last day of the con. Even San Diego Comic-con, the 800-pound gorilla of conventions, does it this way, so it is a time-honored tradition. It's a way for the convention to know in advance which dealers are going to be there early, so they can do advertising- some dealers are actually a draw at the conventions they show at. (For example, at the anime cons we show at, there is a certain j-pop CD dealer that is so popular, they have to always place his tables where he won't cause traffic jams, and there are fans who go to the cons specifically to see what new items he has in stock.)

Also, there is already a limit on how much space you can buy at FC. Radio actually needs two full tables to hold all the comics we've printed, but I only get to buy one every year. The Japanese actually need 2 tables for their wares as well (and so they have room to draw, instead, they draw on the floor behind their table), but they only get to buy one. (And some years, Trump-san has brought six guys with him from Japan, who have then had to be crammed onto one table...oy) It may look like we have a huge amount of space, but in actuality, we only get one each and just request to be placed near our artists who have also bought tables, where we all sort of treat the area like community property and share.

I think they really just need to expand the dealer's room for the con, since there are so many people who want to be dealers now. Or, make two dealer's rooms- they had to do that the last time they needed to expand, and Radio and the Japanese were put in the annex dealer's room with absolutely no loss of sales. Selling half-tables is also a good idea, as then someone who only needs about 3-4 feet of space for their prints could get a space.

Anyway, sorry to go on for so long in your journal. ^_^; Just wanted to mention the precedent for dealer's table sales...

Thank you for clearing that up =)

And yeah I would be for 2 dealer's rooms but for some reason people seem to be against it. It worked for Anthrocon, and really if they moved the art show (which is next door to the dealer's room) that would solve some problems as well IMO.

I missed the end of the last post, what were the lies about FC being said?

thornwolf From: thornwolf Date: April 11th, 2006 07:54 pm (UTC) (Link)
They're covered in that post I linked to. It was basically alohawolf talking on behalf of FC because he thinks he knows something cuz he runs Califur which is a completely different convention.

I ttoally told him off for being unhelpful, but I guess it didn't stick. He's just in it for the drama and the attention, obviously.
thornwolf From: thornwolf Date: April 12th, 2006 12:26 am (UTC) (Link)
I saw that and I think that was an awesome response. I don't think he realizes that /he's/ the one with the circular logic. From what I gathered the FC staff weren't too pleased with this either.
