Back!
I'm back from Califur! I had a blast, despite the fact that I barely left my table for more than a few minutes. I surprisingly didn't make many purchases this year, as there wasn't much that interested me, with the exception of getting a Niko badge from Terrie Smith. I got a few badge trades as well so I will be scanning the lot of them when I can.

Last minute-like, gearpony decided to sell her half of the dealers table to vantid so Vannie and I were selling together and I must say we make a pretty good team. Although Vannie wasn't set up to do conbadges, she was able to draw and ink them and I colored them. The copic markers that danielcoon got me arrived an hour before I had to leave for the con so I was a happy puppy :D

I showed Michele Light my "Ultimate Bear Guide" book that Vannie got me for Christmas because I heard she liked bears, and we did a sketch trade which I will have to scan, along with the piccy that Skamp drew for me in my book. Yey :D Thank you both!

I harassed xianjaguar a little bit, I feel bad for putting the pressure on you for a badge, bud XD I was half kidding! I do love your badges though. I personally think she did the best badges in the whole con. Theyre so colorful!

Went out to dinner with some awesome folks, first Indian food where the waiters there didn't seem to really want us there (they wouldn't give me my Nan bread!), then sushi which was positively orgasmic, I will definitely do that place again, then Claim Jumper where I think I ate just about everything and totally molested timberwolf4u's meat :9 *that sounds so wrong*.

Granted, I was really stressed out this con for some reason, but I still did have fun, especially once I got in "the zone" with drawing where I felt like I was on a roll. I didn't even suffer burnout yet. Even now I wan't to draw, so hey, good things!

There were a few minor things that happened at the con that were least desireable but for the sake of not sounding negative I'll put them behind a cut.

Had a small little gathering in Timber's room with the usual crowd and we were sitting around drawing when some strange guy slithers in (the door was ajar) and says "alriiiight..looking for a good time". He slides past the TV where we had the laptop plugged in and broke one of the connectors! Didn't say anything, just broke it and moved on his way. None of us knew who he was but we were thinking someone MUST know him. After all the door was pretty much closed, it was only slightly ajar so someone we were waiting for could come in. Lemme just say that room party crashing is extremely rude and it just makes you look sleazy ;P We got him out with some passive agressive tactics but man...he broke the connector cord! Not cool. The really weird thing is is he told us his furry name but he wasn't wearing a badge and I didn't see him the whole time at the con. He must have materialized cuz I saw almost everyone who walked through the dealers room and he was /not/ among them. Creepy creepy creepy!

I got picked up, I don't like being picked up. This was one of my big "please no's" in my convention rules I always post (but forgot to post this time) and of course, it happened. That aside I almost got scritched in the head. Some random guy, I don't know WHO he was, just puts his hand out and tries to grab my head. I avoid him and dodge and weave and his hand keeps following me despite my obvious "im avoiding you" motions. He finally goes "whyyyyy?" im like "uh. because I don't like it?" he seemed kinda bothered but shrugged it off. =/

I had a bit more prints this year and sold a lot more than last year because of this. I sold more Thorn Doodles as well and I was happy at the response I got from them but I will say I have a serious peeve that became a reality at this con:

People are treating my table like a library.

Originally I had the Thorn Doodles sealed up so people couldn't thumb through them and damage my display copies, but then I decided people might want to see what they're getting (although this isn't a possibility online and people still buy them) I had people who would stand at my table for 15 minutes at a time, completely read through BOTH doodle books, and not buy them. Now, no pressure to buy, but having been one of those people who frequented comic book stores and was privy to the folks who would treat the store like their own personal story hour, sitting on the floor reading comic after comic and never making a purchase, so this has become an annoyance of mine. Any advice on how to fix this, maybe offer some sample pages up front or should I just grin and bear it? Fortunately the sales made up for my annoyance, maybe I'm just being picky. This is only my second con selling so...*shrugs*

Apologies if I seemed short with anyone this con, kigeni and silber(on the phone) especially, as I don't think there was a time where my attention wasn't being grabbed in multiple directions and I was operating on little sleep as I hadn't had time to catch up really. =/ Oy. I need to make sure I get /plenty/ of sleep at cons, but unfortunately my room was next to the elevator and I kept hearing "WOM....WOM...WOM" all night long. Plus the whole floor stunk like shit and garbage....why? I honestly don't want to know. It was the second floor if you're curious or had a similar experience. Ugh.

But all in all it was good, shout outs to gearpony resilientspider vantid panth, kilojara, westly_roanoke, xianjaguar, kylet, martes, kigeni, timberwolf4u, crimson_fox, haskiwolf, doodlesthegreat, sfinder, mlight, skadjer, kishorwolf, vulpesrex,michelelight and a whole mess of people I met, saw, and already knew but my brain is totally fried right now XD

I'll get to scanning those badges :>

Current Mood: drained drained

As far as the sketchbook stuff goes, I'd recommend having a couple display pages out in plain view, but that's all.

Despite the bad stuff, sounds like a decent time!

WTF at the room crasher. o.O;

And I -HATE- when people go to scritch at me as well. I only personally scritch Mid or Neo...not someone I don't know. x.x;

But I'm glad your sales turned out well for you and everything else was good. :}

Please do scan that badge I did for you. :) I'll do the same with the one you did.

I had a blast with ya! Fun times.

Glad you had a good time!

Yeah, I also think that maybe four or so of your favorite sketchbook pages should be available for perusal, with the general, "A SMALL SAMPLE of what you'll get when you buy my 18-page sketchbook! LOTS more sketches inside!"

And the only problem I'd see with that would be if they really DID want to buy, you might want to have a copy under the table that they can browse the whole thing. But it WILL separate the lookie-lous form the seriously interested peeps. After all, I see that as being the same in a comic book shop....if you want to read a bagged comic, you ask the proprietor if it's okay, and open it in front of them.

I dunno. It would also help to get some words of experience from people who frequently sell comic-type things.

The party crasher would have gotten a fast eject if it had been my room. Almost as fast as an Easter Egg. =};-3

I will get that sketch scanned in for you soon. The whole world needs to see "The Miracle of Easter."

I think offering some samples up front are fine, there's no reason they should finger through everything page by page. Frankly, I say you should just go angry old Chinese woman on them and scream "You buy! You buy now!" and swat them with a fan.
thornwolf From: thornwolf Date: May 9th, 2006 03:43 am (UTC) (Link)
I actually started doing something similar. If people were loitering I would just say "Hi" "Would you like one?" or "Those are limited edition" or "They're only $15, would you like the one you're holding"? They would then go "uuuh...*sigh* yyyyyeaaaah" and reluctantly buy it. ;P

Considering I only had half table space I didn't really like people blocking views to my prints to play library.

Maybe I'm mean, but I really don't feel it's that unreasonable.

:O yanno, i think just go back to the sealed packages, with one out for a sample. After all, you're a small business--not a comic shop. That and you should do it especially cause they blocked the prints D: a definate no no.

I was so thinking the same thing :P "Hurry up and buy! You pick up, you buy!"

It was nice seeing ya again for like 15 seconds. ;D One of these cons we should chill. :)

And GROSS to the creepy guy. It may be the same guy who was leaning against the wall next to our room telling anyone who walked by, "I'm desperately looking for some action".

Furries.

And yes it was nice seeing you again too! Oh my..this weekend was such a blur D: Sorry I didn't get to talk to you much, I didn't know you had a table until i walked aruond and saw your BRB sign!
martes From: martes Date: May 9th, 2006 07:31 am (UTC) (Link)
There's one person in particular that's notorious "stand there for a half hour reading the whole thing then wander away without buying." Since he's a SoCal local, I wonder if he was there standing and reading... He used to do that ALL THE TIME when we were selling Huzzah. fucking annoying.

You might try putting half the pages in a 3-ring binder (like a print book) as a sketchbook sample for people to look through.
xianjaguar From: xianjaguar Date: May 9th, 2006 11:13 pm (UTC) (Link)
Actually, seems there are at least 3 of 'em. I had another one (I know his name now, but I won't say it here) flip though my print book at least 3 times a day, over and over. ONCE, he bought 2 prints. I just about died of shock. I didn't think he would buy any, since he's flipped through my book at other cons and not bought anything. I noticed he did it to ALL the dealers. Flip flip flip, and then close the book and walk off. At least three times a day, every day. AAARGH! (He is not the one you're talking about either)

Hehe... 'tis ok. I just feel bad that I'm not very fast. Otherwise, I coulda whipped up badges for all my friends. But, I'm a slug *snickers* and I can't go very fast at all.
Will finish your badge this week/next week. As soon as possible!

And thanks for the compliment! Your badges are awesome as well!! =)

I'm glad the con went so well for you over-all. Creepy room crasher though, and UGH to being picked up by anyone (except my love-bear)!!! PET PEEVE is right. >_<
You got to eat all my favorite food (Indian, sushi, and MEAT)! ;_;

One random comment: Skamp can be found on LJ at socalbandits. He started including that on his signatures later in the con, but didn't bother with some of the earlier pieces. He's random ^^
