More pics under the cut!
There were a total of 303 steps up to the top of the hill where the castle was.

...and they were numbered

It was a really long climb, but at least the view was nice ;D

Finally we made it to the top!

But not without passing out from heat stroke and dehydration. I'm severely out of shape. (this is me and Phil's friend Thomas)

1.) The Stone looks pink.

2.) The grounds are extensive.

3.) It looks like the Castle was "working" until the 1700's what caused the ruination of it?

4.) Makes a nice part.

actually the stone does have a very pinkish tint to it, i found that odd myself. Its sandstone mostly.

And as for what ruined it? What do you think? The French ;P

That pink sandstone is predominant throughout that region and on west into the Rheinland Pfalz and Saarbruecken, the area I lived in for a couple of years. They even carved their catapoult balls from it, which ranged from the size of a grapefruit to 3 or 4 feet high.

Without the red and white stripes to help me, I absolutely suck at this game ;P

I loved the sights in Germany. Makes my inner history nut squee to see all the remains of old structures. Oh the history!

Such great pictures:) I'm afraid we were lazy and took the bus up the castle. I love that first picture. Really shows off how lovely the city and the castle is.

hbruton From: hbruton Date: August 2nd, 2006 08:55 pm (UTC) (Link)
Urr yeah. It's a regular city bus and you catch it at the foot of the hill and it takes you right to the entrance to the castle.

I absolutely adore historic sites like castles and ruins.

I feel like a kid in a candyshop whenever we go home to scottland and I get to run around and explore the carlisle castle and the Bruce's Cave (for the nine millionth time ^.^) And newcastles cathedrals and newcastles castle.

Ah, very beautiful shots indeed. The ruins look fascinating...I think we all have a bit of a history nut in us somewhere that makes us drawn to such purdy and old thangs. And I'm totally crushing on that last shot...it's so perfect for the last one of the series. Eeez like...YO. Das dah end o' DEEZ pitchas...but dey be S'MO COMIN' OHWN AHEAYED. Or something like that.
