Stolen from JAVA - The art of Thornwolf

Stolen from JAVA
JAVA had this on one of her gallery pages and I think this is really important to get out there.

HOW TO FEEL MISERABLE AS AN ARTIST

(OR WHAT NOT TO DO, UNDERLINE ANY THAT CURRENTLY APPLY)

1. CONSTANTLY COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHER ARTISTS. (I need to STOP this)

2. TALK TO YOUR FAMILY ABOUT WHAT YOU DO AND EXPECT THEM TO CHEER YOU ON.

3. BASE THE SUCCESS OF YOUR ENTIRE CAREER ON ONE PROJECT. (I think last FC's artshow was a delightful surprise but...i doubt it will happen again anytime soon)

4. STICK WITH WHAT YOU KNOW.

5. UNDERVALUE YOUR EXPERTISE.

6. LET MONEY DICTATE WHAT YOU DO. (hahahahahahaha yeah thats me...)

7. BOW TO SOCIETAL PRESSURES.

8. ONLY DO WORK THAT YOUR FAMILY WOULD LOVE.

9. DO WHATEVER THE CLIENT/CUSTOMER/GALLERY OWNER/PATRON INVESTOR ASKS.

10. SET UNACHIEVABLE/OVERWHELMING GOALS. TO BE ACCOMPLISHED BY TOMORROW.

Well... I'd be underlining the same two that you did.
Heh. Especially the "comparing" one. I can't help it. I'm compelled to compare myself to everyone else constantly.

I think number 2 is what really pulls me down. Number 1 comes second along with number 10.

1. 10.

Especially 10. It's the opposite of 4, I feel guilty if I realize I'm drawing something too similar to an older piece and go for NEW and EXCITING and DAMNED DIFFICULT and end up DAMNED DISAPPOINTED. *g*

so horrifyingly true. number one..hey part of being an artist period..however hard we all try to remind ourselves not to compare to other artists, we all still do it. 2/8 avoid talking to my family as much as I can on the matter of art >_>. 6. ARRRGHHH :D.

(btw I'm sorry if I came off snarky on my Da comment to you..wasn't intentional but I felt bad afterwards! o_o )

Honestly it did kinda seem a bit snarky, mostly because I felt like you were dismissing my opinion like I didn't know what I was talking about. I'm just as influenced by Di$ney as you are I just don't show it anymore, so I kinda took it as "you don't know what you're looking at you're blind". You probably didn't mean it that way, but that's how it seemed. I was honestly trying to help you not get questioned because I KNOW how bloodthirsty they can be.

Who stole my itinerary?

Yeek. With a list like this, there has to be a miserable artist's support group out there somewhere.

All of these apply to me except #6 as I've long since learned to just deal with typing paper, Ticonderoga pencils(though Ticonderoga I would recommend to anyone) and freeware programs.

That and I spent money on art supplies way back in the day when I had it to spend. :0p

My biggest problem is #3, which is closely tied into #10.

This is such an awesome post. So true for a lot of these. I know I'm constantly guilty of #1 and #3 I sometimes tend to fall into too. Out of all of these I would say #9 is probably the only one I don't meld too well with. Just because when it's a job & there's money involved sometime your left with limited choices & have to be careful. In cases like that though there's at least ways to make things interesting if one has to though.. :3 But anyway, I really enjoyed this post. These are all great things to keep in mind next time a good woe-storm blows in ;)
