Yet another observation.
If you start off your morning with a fist full of chicken shit...it's just not going to be a good day.

Ah yes, the little things like sanitation we take for granted over here.
thornwolf From: thornwolf Date: September 19th, 2006 04:36 pm (UTC) (Link)
Ah see my reply to altonwings below. Its not that theyre unsanitary over here (although from my stories I've told you about the garbage collection habits in this town you probably don't believe me XD), I think its just a reminder that yes, these eggs come from fowl. But if I wanted to handle bird poop all day I wouldn't have gotten rid of my parakeets.
tarnac From: tarnac Date: September 19th, 2006 04:38 pm (UTC) (Link)
Pfft, bird poop isn't sanitary ;)

And yes, the trash story was O.O

Think about it this way: By not washing the egg at all, they are passing the savings on to you, the consumer!
thornwolf From: thornwolf Date: September 19th, 2006 04:34 pm (UTC) (Link)
Not entirely. Eggs come 10 in a box (not 12) and at the particular local (albeit, expensive) store theyre much more expensive than in the states. The cheaper stores are too far and we have no car so erh...its chicken shit or sore legs.

But then again this store is for hippie dippie organic granola munchers. I think they like to examine that the chicken was, in fact, corn fed (and you can tell right there) before they purchase.

I am really enjoying your little cartoons.
They are so dynamic and they just.. well literally I guess they speak more than a still drawing does. It seems to suit you :)

thornwolf From: thornwolf Date: September 19th, 2006 04:44 pm (UTC) (Link)
You don't eat the shells though
anjel_kitty From: anjel_kitty Date: September 19th, 2006 04:46 pm (UTC) (Link)
Hahah yeah you don't each the shells but if you didn't clean them first and broke then open into your food, what do you think the result would be?
dragonheadthing From: dragonheadthing Date: September 19th, 2006 06:06 pm (UTC) (Link)
The result would be "Good Eats" of course. :)

Could be worse, the eggs could be fertilized.
thornwolf From: thornwolf Date: September 19th, 2006 05:19 pm (UTC) (Link)
My cousin's wife (then girlfriend) used to be a vegan. No meat, nothing from animals etc. The only exception was that she would eat eggs.

...but she would only eat FERTILIZED eggs.

Now I fail to understand how a vegan can justify eating fertilized eggs when normal eggs would be less of a life wasted. It kinda made me go "huh?!"
weeona From: weeona Date: September 28th, 2006 04:59 pm (UTC) (Link)

short answer...

She wasn't vegan! I've got no idea what she WAS ... but vegan she wasn't. This isn't to say I don't appreciate all the stuff she wasn't supporting, but calling yourself vegan and eating eggs is a no-no.

The only possible reason I can see is that if an egg is fertilized, you know that the hens had access to a rooster. Since keeping a rooster in a cage with hens is expensive and creates no profit (he takes up space a laying hen could be using), you can safely assume that the eggs are not from battery hens and instead were at the very least "free roaming" in a barn structure of some sort.

So, she may have been eating only fertile eggs (which didn't actually contain a chick, as I'm sure you know, they are pulled so fast that nothing is there expect perhaps a few cells... so, not a real huge squick factor) in order to make sure she was definitely not supporting battery egg production. It's a good option for folks who want to know they are at least avoiding the worst in egg production, but it's certainly not vegan.

Damn. Working at Whole Foods + vegan = long winded spiel about eggs. Sorry. I hope you were actually curious! Although, as a REAL vegan, folks like that make me CRAZY! They are why I get asked "but you eat fish, right?" :p

Re: short answer...

see thats the thing, she was completely vegan except for this, but even as a totally not vegan no way no how sort of person, I get really squicked by the idea of eating fertilized eggs when its just as easy to eat non fertilized ones. Sure the reasoning behind it could be "oh well these hens are free range" then why not buy free range eggs that aren't fertilized? they say so right on the box and my biology teacher looked into some of the chicken farms the local eggs were coming from and they were, in fact, free range. Its like if some...i dunno..higher being were to be eating our human eggs and be like "oh i only eat the feritlized ones". The non fertilized ones are like...nothing, but the fertilized ones, even a couple cells into it, thats technically a little life.

I know im not making much sense and im crossing over into the whole "what constitutes life" discussion, and yes im aware that i eat animals that very possibly have some sort of thought process without blinking an eye..bust that fact specifically...ew. ;P

PS: I love whole foods. They have a really awesome selection of cheese and granola.

Also, i love your icon =) Nice to see you so randomly in my journal XD

aaahahah since I work on a chicken farm this is particularly humorous to me. chicken shit on eggs is pretty gross, but even more nasty? is have one lay one on your hand as your gathering eggs. eww. ew.

Um. Hilarious, as always, everything Ms Hen is doing in particular. Yet the thought of that happening here gets more and more disturbing each time I think about it. I mean, other stuff is in the cart with the eggs and aaaaaaaaaagh x.x

I didn't know about that extra little "fram fresh" label was still attached. I thank god that things are a bit more high tech here with the lasered on use by dates.

Mind not as bad as the story that I heard from my old collage tuttor about the time she worked in a battery farm. That was rather ewwww.

violetwolf From: violetwolf Date: September 21st, 2006 10:06 am (UTC) (Link)
If you wash an egg too much, you remove the bloom which tends to protect 'em from bacteria and such - basically they'll go off quicker if a lot of effort has been put into washing them.
The egg should be clean (it comes out flawless - I have pet chickens myself) as long as the area around the chicken is clean.

I love the panel with the baseball gear :D
akeyla From: akeyla Date: September 22nd, 2006 12:00 am (UTC) (Link)
this is by far one of the best comics I ever saw :)
oh, bway, I heard somewhere that eggs have this natural coverage layer that helps keeping em fresh (ok, every germ would die at the sight of the poop. Brushing would ruiiiihhhn the whole effect! *drama* So, conclusion, here in Europe with BIO they apparently believe that if miss magic anti-germ invisbile biological chicken coating is on the egg it doesnt matter if there's poop, feathers, blood, straw or random chicken limbs sticking to the egg. It will last longer and has a nice touch of nature smell to it too! back to nature, eh?
And of course a big fat slabber of poop and hay speaks for a happy chicken.
I've had chickens. And they pooped on their eggs when they were unhappy/stressed or when they mistook "poo corner" with "nest box".

ehm... I've learned to open every box before I buy it ;)
