Style exercises
Last night around 2 AM I started feeling arty and so murphmongrel threw some styles at me with the intent that I draw his character in those styles. These are the only 2 I got around to doing (it was late and I was tired D:)

Tom and Jerry

Robin Hood/70's Disney

OMG, awesome! :D
I should be doing more of this kind of style experimentation myself

Very nice! I really like the 2nd one, it's awesome! The 1st appears a bit odd to me, the anatomy I mean. His body seems to be floating around a bit, without having weight. I guess it should be a little more bent and tilted. Still a really good sketch!

Personally I feel its very stiff and "unnatural". It was the first one of the two I did so that could account for a lot of it too. I'll have to take another crack at it that's for certain!

Love to see more. Trying out different styles is cool, you find new things that you like and you learn a lot from it.
Do you know about the 'line of action'? It's one of the basic things used in all cartoon characters. It's a simple thing and it really helps, I could try to make some kind of tutorial picture if you're (or anyone's) interested.

yes i do actually. granted a lot of the motion gets lost when i tighten stuff up, i have a problem with that. But line of action i learned when I was very young and use it in a lot of my drawings, i just erase it. :)

I agree with henriekeg, these are great, but the body is a bit...upright? The character has no motivation.

I have no complaint, though--the pose and structure is not wrong. That sketch would work great for a reference sheet.
