Beneath The Arena
Beneath The Arena - Barbary Lion- acrylic and gouache. My contribution to the wildcatcards card deck project. This is the full version, the version on the card will be cropped to meet the dimensions of an average playing card. Prints are available on ArtSpots on spiffy paper (and I will vouch for their quality they are fantastic)

God I wish I had your light theory. This is amazeing. I like how you included something your passionate about in your peice, instead of a lion walking through a jungle or something.

I think I might buy this deck. Its going to have so much fabulous ar in it.

Any ideas as to how much its going to be yet?

Is the deck only for invited artists? It's just I see no contact address to contact in the community :/

Oh wait, nevermind just heard when the deadline is.
I adore the shading on this, and I love the pearly grey you've used for the light patches.

The project started months ago and people are submitting things down to the wire so thats why the sudden influx of artwork for this project pouring in XD Unfortunately its usually when you see the actual artwork posted for a project the project itself is already way over.

But yeah it was by invite, suggestion and consideration. I asked to join but the organizer is familiar with my work.

I LOVE THIS AND I WANT TO EAT IT. Because it looks so delicious. Man, traditional media really gives your work a punch, it's awesome.

Also, since I apparently don't like taking the time to consolidate my posts, how does one track doown and get involved in all of these themed portfolios and card decks and calendars and such? I've always wanted to contribute, but I've never known how to stick my leg out and hitch a ride.

Well for the bestiary deck I was invited over dinner with the organizers and with this deck the organizer mentioned it on her journal and I have her on my flist so I asked to join. I think just watching friends lists and seeing if anyone mentions the projects just check em out? That's how I heard about the musicportfolio. I haven't had time to take part in it but its a yearly thing, they have a couple editions. If I get invited to another project I'll toss your name into the hat for consideration, I think you'd be a shoe in absolutely, youre so talented XD

Wow, fantactic job! I have to say, you have every aspect of professional illustration in your work, well done with this one. I love how it's a PAINTING, not painted in lineart, and the lighting is beautiful. I'm a big fan of reflected light, it makes things look more three dimensional in a way, and you picked the perfect hue for the reflected lighting on this one. Very cool, I can't stop staring. XD

Thank you! :D Yeah I'm not too keen on painted in line art when it comes to stuff like this. Theres a place for it and ways to make it look good but overall I think it tends to look kinda "coloring book"y. Actually it was chlorophyta who started helping me think in using colors as shapes rather than lines.

Thanks a bunch!

Hmm, now that's something to really think about... I just started sketching a painting for our families christmas card this year which is going to be in acrylic. I'd like to try your mental approach! Do you have any advice, especially on the planning process of making a painting like this?

Would you like some progress shots of this pic? Whats your email?

Basically what I did was I picked a base color (in this case, sepia) and i blocked in all of my shadows that way and went over it with the gouache in light layers. So the light yellow points on the lion actually have the least amount of paint on them whereas the more colored areas have the most. The background color is the basic tone I used. Definitely block in your lighting in one color scale first, it helps.

I'd love that! My email is wolfnymph@gmail.com

hmm, the painting I'm working on has two light sources, moon and firelight, so that may be tricky.

my pic had 2 lightsources too, but I painted the second lightsource over the innitial light source but you could always still leave it lighter in the places where the light is hitting. Ok ill send what i have :)
