Computer Help! Pleeeeeease!
Okay I'll be the first to admit I totally suck when it comes to computers. I know how to use them to draw and to get on the internet but that aside, yeeeeah I get really confused.

I'm having a couple problems though.

I tried to Defragment my C drive and its not working. The D drive worked fine, but when I hit "defrag" on the PC support center option it gave me an error that said:

"Disk defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume HP_PAVILION(C:). Please run Chkdsk /f"

So I look up what this means on the PC support center (I got here by going to Start>Help and Support) and it said that I need to run "Autochk.exe".

Well I go to Start>Run: Autochk.exe and it gives me this message:

"The Autochk.exe application cannot be run in Win32 mode".

I've been getting a similar error message like this lately on stuff that wouldn't have normally been a problem. What is Win32 mode and how in the heck did my computer get that way, and how do I fix it?

Not to mention I've been having some problems accessing my downloaded AIM files. For example I go to My Documents>downloads>(my screenname folder) and it shuts down the explorer window completely, but I can access downloads from other screennames just fine, just mine is completely inaccessable. Which sucks because I have files in there I wanna get out.

Please help! Also, please lemme know what to do in stupidest terms possible...I know that's silly to ask but I'm seriously intimidated by this stuff and I really don't know what the heck is going on.

Current Mood: confused confused

You need to reboot, and it should check your drive for errors.

Favorite thing I used to tell people when I was doing tech support.

Reboot!

what version of windows are you using? I had this problem (or a simular one) a while back too.

I'm with the others here, reboot if you haven't already.

Translations:

1. Win32 mode

"Win32 mode" is the standard mode for a machine running Windows XP or Vista. This is nothing bad or unusual. Programs like autochk.exe and chkdsk.exe won't run in the standard mode.

2. "chkdsk /f" is a program designed to repair problems on your computer. The chkdsk program has apparently been set to run when you restart your computer. If you start up the machine and see the blue screen that says it's going to perform a scan unless you press a key, let it scan.

3. You might be having trouble with explorer shutting down when accessing certain files because there's a problem that needs to be fixed...with chkdsk /f.

If you keep getting this error and aren't seeing a scan take place when you restart your computer, you may need to use Safe Mode. I can tell you how to do that if you like, or you might consider consulting your manuals for it.

Ooooh trust me I totally plan on having a "Fix Niko's Computer" party with you soon, its just a matter of time and money to get out there. I just needed to be able to use my computer now though because i tried to open a PSD file and it took /forever/ so I thought maybe defragging it might speed it up slightly
