Suddenly Skorzy - The art of Thornwolf

Suddenly Skorzy
skorzy's yearly tomato harvest has begun. He grows these monster tomato plants called "beefmasters" and I swear with each new generation, the tomatoes just keep getting bigger and bigger.

This year's plant is over 6 feet tall, totally pwned its cage (we may have to use a flamethrower to retrieve it, but if the vines start shrieking I'm outta there), and produces 3 pound tomatoes.

Three. Pound. Tomatoes.

We have approximately 40lbs of tomatoes all ripening at once. I swear, he's feeding this plant more than plant food...

Photobucket

That said, anyone have any tomato related recipes they wanna share? We're going to be making tomato sauce bases and of course some bruschetta but those can only go so far.

Oh yeah, new cooking icon by selunca. Thanks Sel!

We could dry some I imagine! I do like sun dried tomatoes, I'll have to look up how to do that and how to store them.

And what do you typically fill tomatoes with? I've never had that before.

uhm, a lady from Brussel made those once for us, I think it was minced meat she used.

PS: dried tomatoes softened in olive oil, chopped fine with ricotta make some hohmygodnessporn-of-a-bread-spread.

From a prof of mine:

Try cumin, black pepper, lemon juice, and salt on sliced fresh tomatoes. And fresh cilantro. Chill for 30 minutes.

Interesting. Do you just eat the tomato by itself or with something?

'Fraid I can't cook.
Those are some massive tomatoes! So if you were to throw them at a bad performer on stage, you could probably kill them @.@

Great sketch XD

Those... are... HUGE! I've never heard of beefmasters, just beefsteaks. Either way, those are a bit big. :o I like my Mr. Stripey tomatoes. Nice medium sized, mild tomato. :)

I like the ideas of sun drying them. I tend to like homemade salsa out of ours. Not that I really know what I am doing. I just use a little white vinegar, parsley, and various spices to taste.
thornwolf From: thornwolf Date: August 24th, 2010 05:23 pm (UTC) (Link)
homemade salsa! that's a good idea. I admit I forgot about that option. I'll have to give that a shot :D

skorzy used one tomato to make 5 BLTs for his family.

...

o_o

We could end world hunger with this plant.

LOL! You probably could! XD
nambroth From: nambroth Date: August 24th, 2010 03:20 pm (UTC) (Link)
After only having beefsteak tomatoes for years we tried the beefmasters this year too! They are large though not quite as big as the ones you've got. In all though we far prefer the flavor of the beefsteaks, at least for eatin' straight. XD

Have you considered jarring some, etc? Just to store them mostly as-is. I know I use tomatoes as a component of a lot of recipes but wouldn't necessarily need it as a sauce... just preserved until I wanted to use them :) (black-eyed peas soup curry stuff whaaaat <3 )
thornwolf From: thornwolf Date: August 24th, 2010 05:19 pm (UTC) (Link)
I've never had beefsteak tomatoes but I'm curious to try them, especially in comparison to the beefmasters! I really like these tomatoes though. They're very meaty and not as watery/sloppy as a lot of tomatoes. I admit I'm not a fan of just plain old tomato to just eat it straight like that, but ohmygodtheblack-eyed-peacurryOMGOMGOMGOMG I need to make that soon.

I think I might try the alton brown method of "jarring" them, which is really just preserving them for proper freezer useage. He blanches them, removes the skin, and freezes them. I totally didn't know you could do that o_O
