Pet Food Recall
I work in a pet store, however I will not say which one. There is a massive pet food recall going on and I asked my boss if I could alert people on my livejournal as to which brands have been affected. I was told that legally as a (pet store) representative I may ONLY list the brands, not the types/flavors because of the high media alert right now. You will have to call your local pet store or vet for that, but the list has been updated. List under the cut got from work and various other public online sources, my store does not carry all of these but for your benefit I've included others:

The recall has also spread to treats.

Affected Treats As noted by my company and other PUBLIC online sources.

*Pounce meaty morsels
*Del Monte Jerky Treats
*Gravy Train
*Del Monte Beef Sticks

There has also been a case of a perscription CAT Hill's Science Diet (M/D) DRY food being affected. Please contact your vet for details.

Basically from what I got (and don't take my absolute word on this) is that it tends to mainly affect foods that are in a type of gravy. Most of the recalled items seem to have "gravy" in the flavor name and be of that nature, as that is the type of food that was generally manufactured at that particular facility. Be wary of pouch foods as well and again, contact your pet store or vet for any additional questions. I've also heard from various unofficial sources that the cause was rat poison that had gotten into the wheat that was used for the pet food, so basically a bad batch of wheat that hadn't been properly cleaned or otherwise carelessly rid of pests without thought of the outcome. The pet food companies are doing a really good job at fixing the problem though so if you have any of the affected products you should just go ahead and take them back for an exchange or a refund.

Wow, I used to give my cat Science Diet along time ago... :< it's sorta spooky...

The news for this has been out for weeks, rat poison was initially thought to be the problem but has been ruled out... now they are pointing to a plastic chemical from China! Crazy.

The aminopterin hasn't been ruled out as the cause, but the other chemical (melarmine) was also found in the food and feline urine. We don't know yet which is the cause, or if there is even another chemical yet to be found that is causing it, or more then one chemical working together.

*holds breath, reads through*

Whew! The dog food and cat foods I use are still not on the list! Good lord, if this isn't a wake up call for tighter regulations on what we import, I don't know what is. :-/

Man, this whole pet food recall is seriously scary. Glad to know Purina isn't on there. *sighs*

We used to give our pets IAMS, but not anymore. ^^;

Oh, my kitties' treats are on there. That will be going in the garbage soon as I head upstairs. We got it about a month ago, but I still won't trust it.

I feed my pup dry Purina Beneful, so we're good. But thanks for posting the list. I think Greg gives his cats those Pounce treats from time to time, so I'll alert him.

This is the official site's recall list.

http://www.menufoods.com/recall

It's being updated if it needs to be, but they say that what's listed is pretty much what it is.

aggh! My (very old) dog has been eating a new bag of one of those for about a week now. What should I tell my mom to do? (She lives with her).

If it is the dry version, and the dog is doing alright, don't panic. Make an appointment with your veterinarian for bloodwork to be done that can check for kidney damage. If it is the wet food or your pet isn't acting right (not eating, drinking alot, vomiting or diarrhea) have a complete blood panel done. Your veterinarian may also have a procedure in place for these cases, so a call to your vet would be in order in any case to have it sorted out.

its only canned food fortunately. the dry food hasn't been affected aside from that one case of hills science diet
danthedragon From: danthedragon Date: April 1st, 2007 05:47 pm (UTC) (Link)
Oh phew! Yes, she just eats the dry. Thanks everyone. I get kind of panicked about Sammy's health since she is so old.

Erm.. I've been feeding my cats Iams for years now, more recently Iams Multicat.

What exsactly was the recall for? Poisening in the food? A local family here's dog died a few weeks back from this food re-call. Any ideas? (I didn't quite understand your bottom paragraph. O.c)
thornwolf From: thornwolf Date: April 1st, 2007 05:41 pm (UTC) (Link)
chemicals of some sort getting into the ingredients used for the food.

It only affects canned food though with the exception of that one hills science diet case.

Thanks for the last sentence, Thornwolf :) Alot of people I talk to have been bashing the pet food companies, though they have been trying to get it under control. I just wish they would stop making announcements after 6pm on Fridays :P

The companies have also been very good about reimbursing people for testing on pets that were on the food, or treatment if the animal was affected.

I can so see this scare turning people off processed pet food, and onto Raw or BARF home-made diets.
lupusetgruis From: lupusetgruis Date: April 1st, 2007 10:19 pm (UTC) (Link)
I actually hope people become more interested in what they feed their pets. Not that I think everyone should be feeding their pets homemade raw diets (and I hope people don't rush into it, because not knowing what to feed your dog can be as bad as feeding it Ol'Roy), but there are so many common health problems that can be avoided by not feeding pets stuff like wheat gluten and artificial colours ... :/
rickgriffin From: rickgriffin Date: April 2nd, 2007 01:23 am (UTC) (Link)
Oh good; I was wondering. My cats only eat dry food, but neither Purina nor Meow Mix were on the list, so good.
wicked_sairah From: wicked_sairah Date: April 3rd, 2007 06:54 am (UTC) (Link)
My cats only eat Natural Balance canned and dry food, Moxy eats Nature's Recipe dry and Natural Balance canned. I just switched about two weeks ago to some natural pet treats from a pet health food store. I am not taking any chances here.
