smokepaw took me to neighboring Coloma, to Sutter's Mill, the site which started the California Gold Rush. Gold flecks were discovered in the American River, where the mill was located, in 1848. Today, this town is a little more than a ghost town, completely quiet, little activity, its hard to believe that this place was one of the busiest towns in California, and I believe the state capital at one point.
The Argonaut, a little soda/snack shop that was regretably closed when we were there. I kept smelling sarsparilla scents coming out of it. HOW THEY TAUNTED ME! :(
I cant remember which this was, Wells Fargo or one of the many pony express stops. God I need to retain information better.
This whole town burnt down, was rebuilt, burnt down, was rebuilt, and burnt down again, this is part of all thats left.
The American river.
While we were skipping stones, smokepaw found one that had a little gold vein in it. I have the stone still, but here's what came off in his hand. Yep! Smokey has the golden touch, thats gold dust!
