Sempre caro mi fu quest'ermo colle,
e questa siepe, che da tanta parte
dell'ultimo orizzonte il guardo esclude.
Ma sedendo e mirando, interminati
spazi di là da quella, e sovrumani
silenzi, e profondissima quiete

These solitary hills have always been
dear to me.
Seated here, this sweet hedge, which blocks
the distant horizon
opening inner silences and interminable distances.
I plunge in thought to where my
heart, frightened, pulls back.
Like the wind which I hear tossing the
trembling plants which surround me,
a voice from the inner depths of
spirit shakes the certitudes of thought.
Eternity breaks through time, past
and present intermingle in her image.
In the inner shadows I lose
myself, drowning in the
sea-depths of timeless love.

"l'Infinito" (The Infinite)- Poem by Giacomo Leopardi (1798 - 1837)
Translation by Janet Butler

I think that this poem describes this photo pretty well! ;D

Before I moved to Cali I had never really realized that there was much of a difference in sunsets based off of geographic location, because I had only ever lived in arid/semi arid states. But the skies here have a completely different quality to them!
Seeing this photo makes me miss desert sunsets XD

I noticed a distinct difference myself, but you also can't really beat the ocean sunsets. you don't get those anywhere else really. the east coast gets ocean sun/rises/. thats weird to me!

I used to say the same thing--I thought Santa Cruz sunsets were the best on the planet. Then I spent a summer in Colorado Springs. HOLY CRAP. I used to think Maxfield Parrish made up his cloudscapes--nope. I saw them almost every day over the Rockies.

But I still have a special spot in my sick and twisted blackened little heart for the moment the sun winks out on the Pacific horizon, waiting for the green flash and listening to people applauding on the shore. Best served with clam chowder and/or hot cocoa.

Nice shot!
