Sleipnir - The art of Thornwolf — LiveJournal

I've been reading up on a lot of old Norse and Germanic mythology lately and I really needed to sketch something for myself. Heh. Horserpillar.

Ah, I adore Slepnir...I wish there was more art of him around here, but surprisingly, there isn't, nor of Hugin & Munin, Geri & Freki, Fenrir, Jörmungandr, Ratatosk (or the deer, eagle and hawk that dwell in Yggdrasil), Nøkken, Mara, Huldra or any of the other neat creatures of Norse mythology and Scandinavian folklore...but there IS an annoying overdose of trolls and elves everywhere you look. :P

Duneyr (Rest), Durathor (Slumber), Dvalin and Dain are the four deer that run along the branches of the World Tree, Yggdrasil, shaping the breezes or currents of energy that waft from the eagle perched at the top of the tree and setting the course of the winds in the four directions between the worlds. Ride the winds but do not alter them or you may incur the wrath of one or more of the deer.

*nods* I know, but just didn't list all their names. :) And sometimes the deer are portrayed as goats. I really want to do a detailed papercutting of Yggdrasil someday with all the animals in it, surrounded by Norse knotwork. :)

Don't say his name three times or he might appear.
