Grebe-ous - The art of Thornwolf — LiveJournal
I found a freshly dead pie billed grebe and couldn't pass up the opportunity to "draw from death" as it were, before it started to smell. I couldn't believe my luck! Poor thing had lost its tailfeathers and looked like it had been picked on quite a bit. But at least it makes for good practice at crow quill inking! I kind of fizzled out at the feet because they were very shriveled and honestly my hand started to cramp up XD Ow.

Please bear in mind that I was sitting on the floor when drawing but standing over it to take the photo so the angles are kind of off.

Vantid's rendition:

That's a fantastic sketch of that bird.

BTW, the proper name for the bird is "Pied Billed Grebe", like "Pied Piper", not "PIE bill"

Mmmm.. pie....

Oo, dead thing! I like how you BOTH skipped detailing the feet. ;> Bird feet are hard to draw.

well they were really shriveled and very much "not fun" even though their feet are /incredibly/ cool (like coot feet!) XD I was thinking of drawing them splayed out in my hand though. We'll see. *sniffs bird* I have a little time still :3

Wonderful drawing, reminds me of some of the sketches done by the explorers on the HMS Discovery, although with a little more detail than they did (they tended to work in small notebooks rather than large sheets)

Oh, and I absolutely love the calligraphy you have underneath it, it looks awesome :)

Not the skeleton no.

And we think it was picked on by other birds in excess. Its tailfeathers looked bitten off. Just speculating though, didn't have any other telltale signs of anything too sinister and was in relatively good shape!

Pied Billed Grebes have tail feathers? The ones I see have none at all, just a puff of down that...ends.

well not like "long...luxurious...." tailfeathers, but something looked kinda "not right" back there, there was just a little jagged fluff. I would just assume their butts looked like coot butts. A birdwatcher friend told us this, i wouldn't have known otherwise. Im /so/ not a bird person.

Well, the rendering is absolutely gorgeous. Soooooo soft! I can't fathom putting that much texture into plumage.

Still though. D-: at the morbidness, and it's a hoot how you two are so nonchalant about it XD But I'm just a wuss!

if it was any farther gone than this i would be too honestly. but it just looked like it fell asleep.
