FC Stock - Announcement - The art of Thornwolf — LiveJournal
FC Stock - Announcement
Okay, thought about it a bit, weighed the opinions, talked to some friends, and here's what I've come up with.

I hate printing/piecing together Thorn Doodles booklets. However, most of you said you still want them, so here's what I'm going to do...

FC will be the last con I will be offering the printed Thorn Doodles booklets. Once the stock is gone they are gone. If I have any leftover I may put them up on furbid which will include a shipping charge so if you're overseas or not local or something, perhaps make arrangements with a friend to pick one up for you at the con, after that, I'm trashing them (I live in a one room cabin, I don't have room for stuff XD)

I might might MIGHT switch to a new media and offer Thorn Doodles as CD's. That way you can print em out if you want, but its easier to transport. I'm not sure yet if I'm going to make this retroactive. All future editions of Thorn Doodles will be available on CD, but as for the older editions it all depends on if the raw files are accessible. Once I switched over to Mac some of my older files got stored somewhere...else...so..have to look.

As for magnets, I'll make them and continue to sell them for $3 each. Magnets in stores tend to go from anywhere between 6-10 bucks, and this is hand made and limited numbers of each image. Whatever ones I don't sell I'll offer them here in case anyone wants one/a couple.

Another thing, I need to get rid of my Disqualified Dogs Portfolio CD's. They were $20, I am now offering them for $10. Lowest price I'll be able to go. After FC I'll put the remaining ones on furbid, and again, after that, they're going in the trash.

It might seem harsh that I throw things away but I'm one of those people who can only hang onto things for so long before I start to see them as space fillers, and when you don't have much space to begin with, unnecessary things such as that become disposable. I'm sure most of you noticed I'm slowly but surely backing out of the fandom just because I have my own RL obligations, cons are a fun thing for me, so you can benefit from this by nabbing some of my art and items before they go into the bin. I hope this doesn't make me seem unreasonable, I've just gotta lighten the load. :)

Thanks for listening!

For some reason this depresses me even if I do get your intentions and such

Why does it depress you?

I'm just tired of hanging onto things that don't sell that I don't have space for. I know that might sound pouty but really I'm not pouting about it, just being practical.

I meant more about the backing away from the fandom deal, I can see why you don't have interest for animal people stuffs these days

oh sure I'm understanding that you are looking for a more professional background and such and its not like your human/other stuff isn't worse or anything (in fact I do love it)

then again I'm the kind of people that gets really sad when I see like a discarded plushdoll or antique stores or whatever, its more of a irrational thing than something I can actually elaborate on

No i can see that, thats the reason I still have all of my stuffed animals. I feel bad about giving them up. But...they also have faces. My art books don't really so I really don't have an opinion XD

I'm backing out of the fandom slowly because I find that Im not getting much of a ROI anymore. What I put into it I barely get back anymore, and I'm having less and less time to dedicate to it so its become a hobby, but if its a hobby I should be drawing things I want to draw, not commissions for other people.

I have a lot of art ideas I want to do for myself but no time to do them in, so if I prepare for cons all the time or offer commissions all the time, on top of school and my regular work, I wont have time for myself. I'm winding stuff down, slowly but surely. I owe people things so I don't want to get myself in deeper, I just want to get a handle on things and have a blank slate again.

alright good point, but once in a while you're gonna do like a jokish pic or two of animal people or whatever, right? Nothing serious like those huuuuge paintings you used to do.

Theyre not huge o_O

But of course. The only reason i haven't lately is because I lack time.
kuniopt From: kuniopt Date: December 1st, 2008 06:43 pm (UTC) (Link)
I mean in terms of effort of course not in size.

Oh alright, its that you seem to have a good grasp on both regular and animal people stuff

sorry about this, I'm not even sure why I'm having this attitude, just somewhat clingy today.

I dont draw as many animal people because I'm also trying to broaden my audience to non furries. Beforehand, my entire portfolio was furry related and it was hard to explain it to schools and clients so I dont really want to have to do that anymore. Not to mention the last few solely anthro things I drew either A: didn't sell or B: went for minimum. With limited time, I cater to what people seem to want from me.

yeah I've been gathering that and its awesome that you're doing that

I meant just for fun.

I've heard the "there's no money in [insert genre/audience here]" line a bajillion times now, especially when referring to anything artistic, whether it be in writing, art, or music. I say it's both true and not.

There's money in what people will pay money for. The majority of people want to pay for things other than "anthro" characters, is all. I almost wrote here that there's money in what people WANT, but that's not true. People want a lot of things, but often they aren't willing to pay for it. I've seen this in the "furry" fandom more clearly than elsewhere, but it is everywhere.

Ah well. You've probably already said it or heard it better than I could elsewhere.

As for me, if you enjoy drawing "anthro" art, then I will be glad if you continue to do so. If you do not enjoy it, well, I would rather you do something you love. Your art will be no less enjoyable if you change your subject matter.

Well thats just it, I find myself drawing things to sell, not just because I want to draw. I think I've lost a lot of myself in that and want to get back to it.

Also its kind of aggravating when folks ask me specifically to start stocking certain items/species/things of a certain price range and don't buy it. Its like...why bother? its different than inquiring which is totally okay, but saying "if you made more art with x species in it id totally buy it"...it gets tiresome. I just want to consolidate anyways.

Ugh this whole post is making me seem jaded and apathetic. Maybe I am a little. I wasn't even going to go to FC until my friends convinced me. i don't even have any art in the art show.

I'm going to FC to hang out with my friends and be a dork in fursuit.

That's what fandom is to me. ^_^ (If I can make some cash on the side, awesome, but...otherwise, whee)
From: captainq Date: December 1st, 2008 08:50 pm (UTC) (Link)
Aye. As I said, it's not what people WANT. It's what people will pay money for. "I'd so buy that" doesn't equal an actual sale. Perhaps it's good to be jaded that way. In any case, you're right to speak against that kind of practice.

I think you do well. I also think you do well to talk about it--I've seen too many artists quit, or leave, without saying anything. As long as you keep talking about it with your friends I don't think you'll be lost. It's also good for your audience to know about what bothers you, especially if what bothers you is coming from your audience.

You do art well. As long as you keep doing art that I can look at, I will be glad and thankful. I LIKE anthros, but you don't have to draw them in order for me to be a fan of yours. :)

I hear ya! Stuffed animals I hold onto (I know what you mean about faces), but I get sick of tired of my own art and don't have much room as it is! Enter: the Dollar Bin (for prints, anyway).

If you have any Thorn Doodles booklets left after FC, I will definitely buy. :)
synnabar From: synnabar Date: December 1st, 2008 07:33 pm (UTC) (Link)
er... I mean "I will definitely bid". :D And I don't care if you do Fandom art or not - all of your work is fantastic. I really love the family pieces you just posted! And I always say, draw what you love!
thornwolf From: thornwolf Date: December 1st, 2008 07:36 pm (UTC) (Link)
I have to go through and see how many of each edition I have, I'm really curious if I'll sell out of my stock. I hope I do either way, either through the con or through furbid. They're going to get damaged in storage otherwise.

Just has to be said:

I like you for your art (and your adventures), not whatever fandom you decide to (or not to) associate with.

That is all. :3 *thumbsup*

Re: Just has to be said:

Thank you Neo :3

I feel like I've been pulling this "im leaving the fandom forevar!" thing for years now but I'm not really leaving just lessening my involvement in it and not putting effort into it that could best be used elsewhere. I think I'm really just trying to convince myself most of the time XD

Re: Just has to be said:

And I like ya because you have fuzzy cheeks and a cute snorkle. ;P

I used the furry fandom as a form of help group, of course it had it's ups and downs...but it sure helped me overcome my shyness tho. Now I enjoy going out locally with friends or camping, in fact, the Texas Ren Fest is waaaay more fun than any furry con...

But friends, you can't beat the company. :3

By the way, I have Vol. 1 already. I would love to purchase the remaining Volumes you have. Should I prepay you for them for p/u at FC or something? If it would be better to mail 'em I could do the postage thing as well. Okie dokey? ^.^

Hey I just like your artwork human, animal or otherwise. ;)

Honestly in my opinion selling to furries is always a dangerous game, stuff sells that makes no sense and then other stuff you think is a winner flops.
