Back from Califur! - The art of Thornwolf — LiveJournal
Back from Califur!
Just wanted to thank all of you for an awesome Califur, probably the best I've had :)

Can I just say something about the beds at this hotel? OH MY GOD. Twice, when I was intending to go hang out with friends, the beds..like this Sarlacc pit of comfort, sucked me right in and wouldn't release me. Needless to say this was the first con where I was actually well rested.

Sales were very good. I actually had pieces in the artshow this time which was a Califur first for me. I found it really interesting though that this wasn't very much a badge buying con, but more of a merch con for me. What were everyone else's trends? Cuz this con was really surprising in terms of what people were interested in. I only sold three badges! Usually that's my most popular item o_O

I sold 2 pendants which made me very happy because the recipients appeared to have the same love for them that I did while making them. This always really pleases me :)

And oh god, the FOOD! Artlan Wolf and feralityillust had initially invited me to Shabu Shabu which I feel like a real heel I initially declined because the way it was described to me it sounded to me like fondue, where you put the meat on a skewer and boil it to a rubbery pulp. The thing I dislike about the "meal" part about fondue (aside the cheese and chocolate part, yum!) is that they take prime meat items and then you boil them leaving you with this expensive chunk of something that would have been tastier prepared another way. So needless to say, as I was trying to keep costs low, I wasn't really interested. But then Artlan described it again and skorzy really got excited and wanted to go, I changed my mind. Not to mention I really wanted to socialize with feralityillust more than I had and this was a good opportunity so my want for socialization won out over my dislike for boiled meat.

But oh my god. This was not at all what I expected. I think this is probably one of the coolest new types of foods I've had in awhile, and since its only 10 minutes from skorzy's house, I will DEFINITELY be coming back. Such deliciousness! Not at all what I expected! So, i apologize for misunderstanding, but color me pleasantly surprised!

Saturday night, wanderinghusky, crimson_fox, keesh, skorzy and I went to an Indian food place called Saagar in Newport Beach (which was actually only 6 minutes from the hotel). Their specialty was chicken tikka masala, and oh man, it was unlike any other tikka I've had! The waitstaff was incredibly friendly and helpful and thought to ask us if we wanted more naan bread before we ran out, unlike other Indian restaurants I've been to (they always tend to be so stingy with the naan for some reason, even if you're paying per order, i don't get it!). Everything was fantastic, the atmosphere very lovely, definitely the best Indian food I've had in a good long while. Would recommend!

I didn't actually do hardly any room partying this con as I really just didn't feel like it (and those beds! those beds o_O) but in the end it was for the best because I was able to have plenty of relax time :) Probably the most easy going con yet! Now if only I can make FC go as smoothly...but that has yet to be seen.

Oh and a big thank you to Artlan Wolf for being such a huge help to us all. This guy is seriously the best.

Thank you all for again for a great con! I will be posting some items up that didn't sell in the art show as well as what pendants are left over. Probably going to take "Origins" off the market though, but maybe I'll have it up for auction at FC. We shall see.

I'm glad you had such a great con :D! I think, come to think of it, badge sales were slow for me last year (but then I only offered 2 types of badges and one is take home and spendy). But hey merch selling is always good, less work to do at con, less stress!

And I <3 ShabuShabu, though if you get a chance to try chinese hot pot (Shabu is just the Japanese version), I recommend it too. The main difference is you can usually choose more ingredients to put in your soup..so it's different everytime :D. And I'm not sure whether it's all chinese hot pots or just some, but I know the few I've been to also had soup bases to start with as opposed to plain water (but Shabu is still love :D)

Anyway happy for you, hopefully I'll try to hit Califur next year C:.

Oh yeah, this con was awesome. I only sold one badge, but got a ton of sketchbook and larger take-home commissions. I learned a lot. :)

Great fun seeing you again. I really do need to get the stuff you've done scanned, but there was a bit of a problem on Sunday that I'll go into more detail on in my own LJ.

Those were definitely very nice beds, though I'm still thinking the pillows paled in comparison to FC's hotel.

And you've never had shabushabu before this weekend D: ??
It's definitely very tasty, we went Saturday. Though, I must say, ordering a side of ramen noodles (they are fresh, and need a bit of cooking time), *droools*

I only get to head over there during FC as the Irvine group of furs tend to avoid it for two of the felines got quite ill. Though, I must say -- anyone who gets sick while -cooking their own food- probably can't blame anyone else.

Glad you did well (and I was pondering buying "Origin's" all day Sunday... if it were $105(cash on hand), I would have taken it) It'll probably do very well at auction if you're willing to part with it.

Naw, I haven't been before, but it was incredible! I want to convince the dude to go with me this weekend but I don't know if its too soon or not XD Seriously though, yum yum. Zot warned me about the place for just that reason but, just like you said, you're cooking your own food so...you kinda have control over that or not. Not to mention I'd get beef only, not pork or anything. Too risky for me!

As for Origins, I had no idea you were eyeing it, but thank you :) I'm happy you like it. I seem to have quite a number of people interested in it, but $120 is juuuust out of their price range. I know I couldn't part with it for less, but I might put it on auction at FC though and just keep it safe for now, but that has yet to be seen really.

D'oh! Yes. I wrote your totally WRONG LJ name (expeditionhusky...why do I keep doing that?!) in and remembered 'that's not right...it was something else..i'll get back to it' and didn't put it in. Fixing!
