i can understand that. in particular, it seems like in a community (or fandom) situation, people are more willing to say these kinds of things, which kind of bend the boundaries of "professional" and "casual". a publisher wouldn't ever go out of his way to say "hey, like your stuff, but i can't afford to hire you for my spot illustrations" (at least no one serious about it), yet it is ok for the average consumer of the kinds of products and services we sell to say so. i agree that it really doesn't do anyone any good to say these things, even if they are honest and meant with good intentions.

this treads dangerously on other common correspondences that try to undercut artists: "i don't have any/much money, but..." "if you do some now i'll pay you..." etc.

This is true, I sometimes forget that the furry world is far more casual in nature and therefore things like this are more prevalent because it's as if we're talking to chums.

As for your last point, oh man, I've gotten that so much. I never do free work up front unless I have an existing relationship with that client where they've made good on their promises, paid in a timely fashion etc. And that usually takes a few times. Unfortunately it's not always successful, I recently did work up front and never heard from the individual again. One of those "I'll pay you next week *disappears*" things. But eh, my fault I guess. Live and learn!
